Link Building
Link building is one of the most important elements of achieving a higher ranking and one of the best ways to build backlinks to your blog is through web2.0 sites. There are so many web2.0 sites out there, and some of them carry a lot of weight with search engines like Google when it comes to authority. We all know that backlinks from dofollow sites are the ones that actually count when it comes to achieving a higher ranking. That is why most bloggers only use dofollow web2.0 sites to build backlinks. That is a huge mistake!

Googles Number 1 Link Building Rule

If you read Google’s webmasters guideline or ask any SEO expert, you will know that the number one rule for link building is that they should be built naturally. Do hunderds of backlinks all from dofollow sites and no links from nofollow site look natural to you?… Exactly! That is why I made this big list of web2.0 sites without worrying about dofollow or nofollow web2.0 sites. The best practice for link building is using a mix of both kinds of web2.0 sites. By using only dofollow web 2.0 sites to build backlinks, you risk getting your blog penalized, as it will make Google and other search engines suspicious. With that said, here is the list of web 2.0 sites along with their current page rank:

Hello Satrap and thanks for this very informative list. I have 2 questions for you. First, what is a 2.0 website? I see the term thrown around but not sure what attributes classify one as such. Also from what I have read about link building and building page rank through it, that you should do so with sites that are in your niche. For example those who have an music entertainment blog should build links with other like minded sites and not those about sports, education, politics…(those are just some examples I am throwing out) or does that matter anymore whether the sites you are leaving links on are relevant to yours?

      Karen,

1- Web 2.0 is basically another form of websites, websites that are built with user generated content. Web 2.0 sites allow you and I to easily interact or collaborate with each other in a social media dialogue. It lets us share information, opinions, comments, ideas, links, ratings and etc. It basically comes down to this: web 2.0 means use generated content on a local level that can be shared and accessed in a global level! Hope that explains it.

2- Yes, its always a good idea to get links from relevant sites. However, as I explained above, web2.0 sites are use generated content. which means you can go in and create a page on any topic and add links to your own site and have it published on the web. So in a sens you are building backlinks from relevant pages.

          You are welcome Karen.
The name web 2.0 is actually credited to Tim O’Reilly (he is the founder of O’Reilly Media, and a big big technology advocate). They say that in 2004 his company had a conference where they were brainstorming ideas for making a new kind of web technology where everyday users like me and you could use the web in a more interactive way. The conference was called “web 2.0 conference” and thats where the name comes from.
Although, some people disagree with this and associate the name to others. But, this is what most people believe to be the case.

A while ago, one backlink from Squidoo could greatly increase your ranking, but sadly spammes raised the flag for Google. So, Google isn’t showing the love it used to show for Squidoo and that is why it has lost a lot of its backlink values. Although Squidoo still can be used for getting a lot of traffic,

  19. Hello Satrap,

    Two points.

    1. Just because a website puts NOFOLLOW on the link does not mean Google or other search engines do not count the link. For all we know, Google may count NOFOLLOW links higher than FOLLOW, doubtful, but possible. So, I agree with you, do not worry about the NOFOLLOW part.

    2. Not sure I agree with the slow and steady link building. Suspect that natural link building can happen in bursts when something is popular. If someone sees something useful, sends it to a 50 friends and they send it to 50 friends, you can have a whole bunch of links at once. Whereas one guy building links to his blog, can only do so many. So, slow and steady link building may be more indicative of unnatural link building.

    • satrap says:

      Thanks for your comments.
1- I don’t know about other search engines, but Google doesn’t put any weight on links from nofollow sites.
This is not my words, this is what Google says about nofollow links,

“…How does Google handle nofollowed links?
In general, we don’t follow them. This means that Google does not transfer PageRank or anchor text across these links. Essentially, using nofollow causes us to drop the target links from our overall graph of the web….”

You can read more about it on Google WebMaster Central

2- I agree with that and that is why I said “…though in some rare case it could happen naturally, like when a post of yours goes viral and hundreds of blogs link to you in one day…”

“By using only dofollow web 2.0 sites to build backlinks, you risk getting your blog penalized”

I can’t see this being correct though. As a site owner you have no control over who is creating backlinks for your web site – it means a random person, maybe a competitor, could sabotage your web site by generating thousands of dofollow web 2.0 sites backlinks trying to get you penalized. Wouldn’t seem fair to me.

I think your link building efforts should concentrate on getting dofollow links with varied anchor texts. As you start to rank in search engines you will start naturally getting back links and you will see that most of those will be not so effective anchor text like “Click here”, why waste time getting nofollow when you are likely to get the naturally anyway naturally.

Nishadha, Thanks for adding your feedback. You touched on a very important point that I forgot to mention and thats building links using different anchor text. I agree with you that when you start to rank well, you will get backlinks naturally, but why would you wait until you rank well to promote your blog? Plus, most of us may not rank that well in the search engines to get tons of natural backlinks. And beside the point I made earlier about making it natural looking by using both dofollow and nofollow sites, don’t forget that so many nofollow sites rank quite well and get a lot of traffic and having your link there, could drive a lot of that traffic to your site. After all, all these link building and trying to rank well is for the traffic!

Thanks for posting this list – I didn’t realize there were so many more options than Hubpages and Squidoo.

With that being said, I question how many of these blogs will actually get indexed by Google. I assume that they have a decent chance of getting indexed if quality content is added as opposed to spun garbage…
Ella recently posted..Beneficial Herbs Used In Body WrapsMy Profile

    • satrap says:

      Ella,
Getting indexed by Google doesn’t have anything to do with the quality of the content. It comes down to the popularity of the web 2.0 site you use and most importantly what you do to index your web 2.0 property. Its all about getting search engine boots to visit those pages.

I simply bookmark each property to at least a few top social bookmarking sites such as digg and submit RSS feed to RSS directories. You can also interlink your properties to help get them indexed faster.

With that said, I dont think you should put up garbage. Quality content can always help you in the long run. While we use these sites just to build backlinks to help increase se ranking, your web 2.0 property itself might end up ranking high one day and if you have good quality content on them, you may very well see lots of targeted traffic to your main (money site) site.

Do you think having many links pointed to 1 of your web2 property and from there only 1 link to your money page is better, than having all the links directly to your money page? Hub-pages by the way should be do-follow as well if you remain some content score.

That is a lot of research and a great foundation for backlinks. There are quite a few on there I never thought to look into! Do you think they all have ‘dofollow’ links available?!

I am sorry, I dont quite understand it?… How would you use about.com to build backlinks?…
The only way to do that would be to apply as an expert author to write articles for them, whcih most people who apply dont get accepted. About.com is not a web 2.0 site that average blogger can use to build backlinks.

I always like to start my linkbuilding with a linkwheel.
I use ezine and more high ranked article sites as my tier 1 and many web 2.0 as my tier 2′s.
y reasoning for this is that the articles will always be there and the web 2.0 change their rules all the time.
I stopped using squidoo, because of the time consuming updating they expect.
I try to use as many high page rank web 2.0 and mix them in my linkwheels.
I found a few more in your list that I will start using.
Thanks for sharing this with us

Thanks for the great list. Very useful. One more thing I use is Facebook Notes. It’s a good idea to post informative notes on your brand’s FB page They’re indexed by Google! Well, they’ll be nofollow, but I believe they work. Also good for direct traffic.

    You are welcome.
You are on the right path, keep doing what you are doing and you will get there.
And you are right, its best to not be picky about dofollow-nofollow, since natural backlinks don’t just come from dofollow sites.
    Best of luck to you.

I hadn’t thought about slowly building links before, but that makes sense. If a new site just shows up out of nowhere and goes from 0-200 backlinks in a day it probably raises some flags for the search engines. I wonder just how often links should be added? 1 a day? A couple per week?

  77. Suumaya says:

Thanks for your list satrap and I agree u on natural link building.

I have an issue, since it is difficult to write unique content for every web 2 site, can I write a blog or article and submit it to all the sites as it is? or should I spin the articles? Will i get the link juice?

If anyone has better strategy for web 2 link building, Plz Share. Thanks!!!
