You’ve created a new website and you want to make sure it’s popular and widely used, which is why I am going to discuss a few basic and important steps about SEO for your new website, as search engine optimization might help you get traffic on your new website.
#1. Content in the Kingdom
Firstly, and importantly your website should be able to provide good content. The information should be reliable, useful and sufficient and it should be presented in a way in which people wouldn’t have trouble reading it or sharing it. People would make it a point to remember a website and/or share it if their content is understandable and coherent. Many a times, the key to getting more people like your page can be quality content.
#2. Learning Basic SEO
New Webmasters often reluctant to learn search engine optimization because they think it is difficult when in fact it is not. Think about it this way, a person types a keyword into the search engine, sees the results and gets attracted to the title of the page, then hopefully visits your page.
Now you need to think how you can:
- Get listed in the search engine in the first place.
- Attract the searcher to click on your title.
People never really think about how SEO works deeply but obviously easy. Keyword relationships on your page and in linking are often ignored. This is why I suggest that the first place SEO starts is in your thoughts about what your visitors would be searching for.
#3. Search Engines Hate Errors
Secondly, taking care of all the errors and making sure that your website is reachable and accessible is highly important. Errors can spoil many things and might lead to many people turning elsewhere for their information, which is why you need to make sure of the fact that your website is reachable, and has content which can be easily understood. You can use different tools which are widely available online to make sure that you avoid mistakes.
A Few Bad Side Effects from Website Errors:
- Broken links within your site causes your site to have low rankings”¦Trust me I know this from experience!
- Serving too many 404 error pages removes that URL from the search engines. Who wants to send someone to an error page?
- Slow loading pages cause people to leave your website.
- Errors lose trust. It is that simple.
There are so many errors to avoid but that is another article entirely.
#4. Looks and Usability Do Count
Also, the way your webpage looks matters and it is something you need to keep in mind while focusing on the SEO for your new website, and a lot of people don’t believe that, but the thing is that when people visit the website, the way it has been designed and organized matters, which is what decides whether or not a person will visit the website again. An example would be your website navigation menu. People take this for granted and do not realize the SEO and visitor experience value.
No doubt the content matters greatly, but the way it is presented also matters because it makes it all the more understandable and appealing to look at.
You can either hire a professional designer who can work on your page, or do it yourself with the help of easily available tools online. This is why I always recommend buying a premium WordPress theme. They not only have inbuilt SEO, but they make you look professional too and this is important!
#5. Getting Social is Now SEO
Connecting with social networks is important, many websites give the option to “like” or “plus” or “tweet” or “pin” which is what plays an important role in the website’s rankings and popularity. So while you’re working on your page, make sure that you set up social accounts, ranging from how popular each one, starting from Facebook and moving on to other popular sites such Google+, Twitter and LinkedIn.
Also, try to get in touch with professionals who have skills and knowledge about a certain subject and are willing to share. If they have websites, talk to them about introducing their content on your page. These reliable bits of information will most probably help you get traffic on your web page, as this way you can build your links and make sure that your web page looks well informed.
New Website SEO Basics
Lastly, what you can make sure of is that the most important things are in order, for example the content and the way in which it is presented, or that there are no errors. Also keep in mind that your webpage shouldn’t look worthless because if it does, you might fall behind on the rankings on Google which are hard to maintain anyway.

I agree, I wouldn’t give my SEO to an outside company. SEO is easy, unless you’re just referring to the social marketing and such, in which case once your site gets huge then yeah maybe.

Content is king but there are few niche (subject) which are saturated and can’t write more on those subject(s) , how do we get those content rank high in serp and/or how do we make sure that our content is unique(although its unique in sum context but not 100% unique) .

Good post for newbies like me! I found a plugin for WordPress called broken link checker that notifies me immediately of any broken links so that this will not affect my current rankings…. Also I have found really good results in regards to rankings when running G+ campaigns…. Actually in one situation I gained 3 pages in one day from just a push to get more G+’s on my website!

I have been hit many times and I just ride the waves… As long as you do not have errors and bad things linking in you should come out on top.
I have had times where my SEO has disappeared, meaning it was like I had no links going to a site. At that stage I had to rebuild links and get out there again.. That worked for me… I just fight harder… never go down..

I’ve noticed that Social interaction on site such as Facebook, Twitter, Google + etc. seem as though they’re becoming more important than things such as keywords, descriptions etc. As the days go by seemingly more traffic is driven via social networks than any other source.
Seeing how hard it is to rank in the search engines, do you feel it’s more important to focus most attention to those social networks rather than the standard SEO techniques? Or are they both equally as important? Seems that the ranking will follow if you get a good following. Your thoughts?

No Social is not more important. It is a part of the whole package. Social is now added to SEO along with great content. One without the other is useless. Unfortunately it used to be easy to rank and you only needed to do a few things..Now you need to be a jack of all trades to rank and social is part of that.

In regards of your number #3 about errors and broken links on websites, there is a really great WP plugin called “Broken Link Checker” that finds all the broken links on your website and gives you an option to decide whether you want to unlink or delete or dismiss the error. It helped me tremendously. I used to have a hard time to locate those broken links on my site and now it’s a no-brainer.

I agree that this plugin is great…but I leave it deactivated on most blogs and only activate when needed as it has caused problems for me… But I cannot do without it so I activate and use when needed.
Now-a-days get ranking for your site is going more crucial but if you will apply these strategy for your online marketing then i don’t think so you will face any kind of problem .

I learned something new here about visitor’s experience. I am also have experienced on webpage looks. It does matters. I am previously using twenty-eleven theme which is in line with the “simplicity” image of my blog but the alexa decrease slowly. Until I found to many technical problem with it until I decided to switch to better theme (that I use now).
I noticed that my alexa was reduced from 440K to 329K, that was great. Your tip here is true

Then I came to know that this is also important and some users in a forum suggested me to get rid of broken links. I used “Broken Link Checker Plugin” to do that. Social has def’ had the biggest impact on SEO recently. Google are really starting to filter out the sites that are of low quality as well.
looks do not influence seo directly, but what is does do is build trust with the readers. Which is just as important as getting them there in the first place.

There’s so many tools out there nowadays to help with SEO. When I started web design, the only available SEO tools were Webconfs, which at the time mined backlinks from the big 3 engines and checked your keyword content for saturation. There’s now sitemap generators that will check for 404′s, missing images, pages, in-bound links to dead pages etc. Companies have been set up to crawl the web and rank incomming links. SEO is now something that is (I wouldn’t say it’s easy) straightforward. It’s about not overdoing it though and continually plugging away at it.

Can’t say enough about keeping things “clean” It’s just about learning and keeping to the basics. I’m getting some traffic from Google so my SEO is working but a lot of my traffic comes from other places. Still, I like to KISS it, monitor it, and just let it be for a bit so I don’t over do things.
